Homemade Cough and Cold Syrup

Since you can not
find a brand name
cough and cold syrup
for kids under the age of 6
what is a parent to do?

I came across Stephanie's
recipe for this syrup
some time ago
and have made it a few times
I find it seems to
help decrease the coughing
once I've given it to my kids
and they have no problem taking it
I use an onion chopped up
enough honey to cover the onion
2 teaspoons of whole cloves
2 teaspoons of powdered slippery elm*
1 tablespoon chopped ginger
*I bought capsules of
slippery elm at my local
health food store
Comfrey, is not
easy to find in Canada
in the Health food store
but easy to grow and dry
at your own home

everything goes into
a pot and simmers for 20 minutes
with the lid on

once cooked
you strain it
and of course
wait for it to cool
before using

this can be stored
in the fridge
and it will not crystallize
1 teaspoon for kids
1 tablespoon for adults
every half hour as needed

Now, go forth
read the link
make the syrup
live healthy

**I was asked where
I purchased the items
in my last post
the Eucalyptus Oil
almond Oil
and Tea Tree Oil
these can all be
found in your local
health food store
or in the natural isle
of your grocery store
I buy my Tea Tree Oil
at Costco, it's a fantastic price
and of course
Amazon.com is great
for natural items

  1. I may have to try this. Not because I can't find medicine OTC but because it never seems to work.
