Coconut Oil Convert

Coconut Oil
It's been around for years.  I've recently discovered it in the last few months and I have to say.  I am a true convert.
I have done a ton of reading and research about coconut oil.  It really is amazing.  I now use it for most everything.  I bought a gallon bucket of it and have put it into containers all over my house.  I even keep some in my purse, just in case.
I started using it in my kitchen.  It makes the most amazing popcorn.  I also use it for most all of my frying and will melt it for my baking when any recipe calls for oil.
Coconut oil is generally solid but will liquify when it warms up in the summer.  The great thing is, it does not change the integrity of the oil by changing from solid to liquid and back again.

As I did more reading I started to use coconut oil more and more.   I use it as a moisturizer.  It's fantastic.  Because of my kids west indies heritage they have very chalky skin.  I use it on them almost everyday and it has made an improvement on their skin tremendously.  Here they are with their grandpa.

My girl also suffers from mild eczema.  Everyday she would be begging me to scratch her back and tummy numerous times a day.  She almost always had broken her skin from scratching.  Since I started putting coconut oil on her almost daily she has not once complained about being itchy and is no longer itching herself like crazy and doesn't ask me to itch her anymore either.

I keep coconut oil in a container downstairs where I most often change the kids.  It's usually solid (unless we've had a hot day) so I just take a small chunk and rub it in my hands and it melts right away and I start to rub it on the kids, a little goes a long way.  It does not ruin or leave marks on their clothes.  Trust me, I would be able to tell.
My boy had a cold sore and a friend had told me how she used it on her son's cold sore.  So the day the cold sore turned up, I just started putting coconut oil on it numerous times a day.  Normally his cold sore will spread and take some time heal.  By the second day the cold sore had not grown and was crusted over.  By the end of the week, the cold sore scab was gone and his lip was healed up.

I woke up with an eye infection two weeks ago with both my eyes crusted shut, I think it was pink eye.  I took coconut oil and rubbed it straight on my eye and inside the lid a few times that day.  By the next day one of eyes was better and by the third morning they were both clear of the infection.  It did not hurt my eyes, in fact it felt better and took the sand feeling out of my eye when I did apply it.  I also have been using it on my own eczema.  I also have been using as a moisturizer for my face and body.  And it healed up a spot on a new tattoo that was having trouble healing.

Today I cut myself while cooking.  When my boy came in and saw the band-aid, he questioned me.  I explained when happened.  He looked at me and asked if I put coconut oil on it.  I had to smile at his concern and tell him I forgot to do that.  He was very annoyed at me that I had not put coconut oil it yet.  He demanded I remove the band-aid and put on the coconut oil.  It seems I may have rubbed off on him with all my talk about the benefits of coconut oil.  He also saw a scab on his grandma the other day and I overheard him telling her she needed to put coconut oil it.  It was good chuckle.
Click on the pictures of the coconuts and read some of the amazing facts for yourself.  I'm excited to see what else I can use coconut oil for!

Homemade Cough and Cold Syrup

Since you can not
find a brand name
cough and cold syrup
for kids under the age of 6
what is a parent to do?

I came across Stephanie's
recipe for this syrup
some time ago
and have made it a few times
I find it seems to
help decrease the coughing
once I've given it to my kids
and they have no problem taking it
I use an onion chopped up
enough honey to cover the onion
2 teaspoons of whole cloves
2 teaspoons of powdered slippery elm*
1 tablespoon chopped ginger
*I bought capsules of
slippery elm at my local
health food store
Comfrey, is not
easy to find in Canada
in the Health food store
but easy to grow and dry
at your own home

everything goes into
a pot and simmers for 20 minutes
with the lid on

once cooked
you strain it
and of course
wait for it to cool
before using

this can be stored
in the fridge
and it will not crystallize
1 teaspoon for kids
1 tablespoon for adults
every half hour as needed

Now, go forth
read the link
make the syrup
live healthy

**I was asked where
I purchased the items
in my last post
the Eucalyptus Oil
almond Oil
and Tea Tree Oil
these can all be
found in your local
health food store
or in the natural isle
of your grocery store
I buy my Tea Tree Oil
at Costco, it's a fantastic price
and of course
Amazon.com is great
for natural items

Immune booster: The pungency increases blood circulation and causes sweating. Useful in cold weather to ward off infection, reduce fever and sweat out colds and flu.

Ginger Tea with Honey
it has a bite

to sooth a sore throat
it's just hard to get
the kidlets to agree
I generally ad just
a little to their
watered down juice
To make the Ginger Tea
I smash up a bunch of Ginger root
and boil it in water for about 20 minutes
then we drink it with plenty of honey

I also make
a homemade cough syrup
for my kidlets
I'll post that
in a separate blog post
so keep your eyes open for it

I am by no means
an expert in any
natural remedies
nor can I say
100% if they always work
your doctor will tell you
they don't work, most likely
I don't agree
but I feel it's good to try
and I know for my kids
some of them are working
I highly recommend
Tea Tree Oil for
so many uses including colds
and I have had great
success with the
Eucalyptus Oil
But you need to research
and find what works
in your house

Happy reading and searching
for your natural cures!
